Prompt Engineering 101: From Zero-Shot to Chain-of-Thought

The single biggest lever you have over an AI agent’s performance isn’t the model you choose. It’s the prompt. A well-crafted prompt transforms a mediocre model into a reliable automation engine. A poorly crafted one makes even the most powerful model unpredictable. This guide covers the core techniques — from the simplest starting point to the approaches that unlock consistent, structured output from any agent stack. It maps directly to ATM™ Academy Track 01.

What Is Prompt Engineering and Why Does It Matter?

Prompt engineering is the practice of designing the text inputs to a language model to reliably produce the outputs you need. For a chatbot, this matters somewhat. For an autonomous agent executing tasks without human review, it matters enormously.

When an agent misunderstands a task due to an ambiguous prompt, it doesn’t just give a bad answer — it takes a bad action. It might delete the wrong files, send the wrong email, or loop indefinitely. The cost of a poor prompt in an agentic context is orders of magnitude higher than in a conversational one. Investing 30 minutes in a prompt can save hours of debugging and dozens of failed task runs.

Technique 1: Zero-Shot Prompting

Zero-shot is the baseline: you give the model a task with no examples and no scaffolding. It’s appropriate for simple, well-defined tasks where the model has strong prior training.

Summarize the following customer support ticket in one sentence.

Ticket: "I've been charged twice for my subscription this month and
nobody has responded to my emails for three days."

Tip: Zero-shot works best when the task is unambiguous and the expected output format is implicit from the task description. If you find yourself getting inconsistent outputs, move to few-shot before anything else.

Technique 2: Few-Shot Prompting

Few-shot prompting provides 2–5 examples of the exact input-output pattern you want before presenting the actual task. The model infers the pattern and applies it to new inputs. This is remarkably effective for formatting, classification, and extraction tasks.

Classify customer support tickets by urgency. Use ONLY these labels:
HIGH, MEDIUM, LOW.

Ticket: "My account has been hacked and someone is making purchases."
Urgency: HIGH

Ticket: "I'd like to update my billing address."
Urgency: LOW

Ticket: "The mobile app crashes when I try to upload a photo."
Urgency: MEDIUM

Ticket: "I haven't received my order from 3 weeks ago."

Tip: Make your examples representative of the variance in your real inputs. If your examples are all easy cases, the model will struggle on edge cases. Include at least one example that might seem ambiguous.

Technique 3: Chain-of-Thought Prompting

Chain-of-thought (CoT) asks the model to reason through a problem step by step before producing a final answer. It dramatically improves performance on multi-step reasoning tasks — math, logic, complex decisions — because it forces the model to externalize its reasoning rather than jumping to a conclusion.

A customer has a plan that costs $49/month and wants to upgrade to
the $149/month plan. They have 12 days remaining in their billing cycle
and their cycle is 30 days long.

Calculate the prorated upgrade charge. Think through this step by step
before giving the final number.

The phrase “think through this step by step” is the trigger. You can also prime CoT by providing a worked example in few-shot style where your example shows the reasoning process explicitly.

Tip: CoT adds tokens to the output, which increases latency and cost. Use it selectively for tasks where reasoning quality matters more than speed. For classification or extraction tasks, few-shot alone is usually more efficient.

Technique 4: System Prompts

System prompts set the agent’s role, persona, constraints, and operating context before any task is presented. In ATM™, the system prompt is the foundation of every agent blueprint — it’s what makes a general-purpose model behave like a specialized billing agent, a customer service rep, or a code reviewer.

You are a billing support agent for Acme Corp. Your role is to:
- Help customers understand their invoices and subscription plans
- Process refund requests up to $50 without manager approval
- Escalate all fraud reports immediately using the flag_fraud() tool
- Never discuss competitor pricing
- Always respond in the customer's language

You have access to the following tools: lookup_account,
process_refund, flag_fraud, send_email.

Tip: Be explicit about what the agent should NOT do as well as what it should do. Constraints are as important as capabilities. The more precisely you define the operating envelope, the more reliably the agent stays in it.

Technique 5: Structured Output

For agents that feed their outputs into downstream systems — databases, APIs, other agents — you need outputs in a specific, parseable format. JSON is the most common target.

Extract the following fields from this support ticket and return
them as a JSON object with exactly these keys: customer_name,
issue_type, urgency, account_number.

If a field is not present in the ticket, use null.

Ticket: "Hi, this is Sarah Chen (account #AX-4421). My invoice
shows a charge I don't recognize from last Tuesday."

Return ONLY the JSON object, no other text.

The phrase “Return ONLY the JSON object, no other text” is critical. Without it, many models will wrap the JSON in explanation or markdown code fences, which breaks naive JSON parsers.

Tip: For production pipelines, use model APIs that support native JSON mode or tool-calling with typed schemas. This enforces structure at the API level rather than relying on prompt compliance alone — far more reliable at scale.

Putting It Together: A Production Agent Prompt

In practice, a well-engineered agent prompt combines multiple techniques. The system prompt sets the role and constraints. The task prompt uses few-shot examples to guide format. Chain-of-thought is added selectively for decisions that require reasoning. Structured output is enforced for anything that feeds into automation.
